As with the earliest Greek rectangular temples, the vernacular architecture was used, and the church was therefore a round house with a thatched roof. *73 In the early twelfth century the church was still standing, with an outer stone wall and within a large shed, when the respected historian William of Malmesbury (by 1125) saw this little “church of boughs” within Glastonbury Abbey, then a leading pilgrimage center for medieval Britain.
